Russia-Ukraine war also hit the textile sector! There are big problems in exports

The uncertainties experienced in the economic field after Russia's invasion of Ukraine negatively affected the textile sector in Turkey. Remzi Gönültaş, owner of Gönültaş Tekstil, one of the textile manufacturers in the ready-to-wear region of Istanbul, drew attention to the problems experienced in the sector with the words "We are the representatives of the sector that exports 1 billion dollars to Russia and 500 million dollars to Ukraine annually, we want the war to end as soon as possible".

The war between Russia and Ukraine, which has been going on for more than 2 months, has negatively affected Turkey as well as many countries in terms of trade relations. According to official figures, a total of 460 million dollars of ready-to-wear clothing and 153 million dollars of leather and leather products are exported to the two countries, which are of great importance especially for the textile sector. Ready-to-wear and leather exports to Russia together with the passenger cargo is close to 1.5 billion dollars, while exports to Ukraine is 750 million dollars.

Gönültaş Textile Owner Remzi Gönültaş, who mentioned the difficulties they are experiencing while the textile sector is one of the sectors that are having economically difficult days due to the export problems caused by the war between the two countries, said, "We are the representatives of the sector that exports 1 billion dollars to Russia and 500 million dollars to Ukraine annually, we want the war to end as soon as possible.

THE SECTOR IS IN A DIFFICULT SITUATION DUE TO PROBLEMS IN EXPORTS

Remzi Gönültaş, who serves in RG Kidsstore stores in Merter and Zeytinburnu in Istanbul, said, "There is an intense demand for the Turkish textile market due to the high dollar exchange rate and the coronavirus in China. However, we are having problems with production. We have to dispose of a large part of the finished and semi-finished products, whose exports have not yet been realised, below their costs due to order cancellation. We have to choose alternative routes to fulfil our commitments in our exported orders. This situation creates problems in terms of time and cost. In addition, the depreciation of the ruble against the dollar, we wonder according to which parity will be evaluated, "he said.
